Here are the changes I’ve made to my Ubuntu 9.04 to max it out.

First after installing Ubuntu, since this will be a VM we definetly need to install VMware Tools:

INSTALL VMWARE TOOLS
-In VMware server click: VM > Install VMware Tools
-Select install
-copy the tar that has been mounted into the tmp folder, example: cp /media/cdrom/VMwareTools-1.0.3-44356.tar.gz /tmp/
-navigate to the tmp folder: cd /tmp
-extract the compressed file: tar xvfz VMwareTools-1.0.3-44356.tar.gz
-switch to this folder: cd vmware-tools-distrib/
-run the installer: sudo ./vmware-install.pl
-Select the default settings that are presented to you by clicking enter until it is complete

Let’s change the theme
-Download a good theme from gnome-look.org or other site
-Place the extracted folder in the user’s home directory inside the “.themes” folder
-Good theme that I used was -> Brushed_metal & Graphite gtk2 theme
-Go to: System > Preferences > Appearance
-Select the theme in the List
Note: the brushed theme requires you to install the “NouveXT Icons by Drake” icon package

Then click on the “Fonts” tab and choose fonts that look appealing for the desktop

Change the Wallpaper to something interesting
Here is a good one from gnome-look.org -> linuxflavours

Add a few things to the bottom panel:
-Clock

Next we’ll install conky.
Here is a conky package that looks good -> CONKY-colors found on gnome-look.org

We’ll use some fonts from the conky theme “CONKY-colors” found here -> CONKY-Colors
-Copy the “.fonts” and “.scripts” folders to the users home directory

Here is how my .conkyrc file looks:
