VMware Guest VM CPU Usage on a Hyperthread System June 13, 2009

Please reference my previous posts regarding my setup and the crashes that I have been experiencing.

Well my system is still experiencing crashes intermittently, but I am getting closer to achieving a stable configuration. Currently I’ve noticed that the VM’s CPU usage reaches 100% quite often and it is only configured to use one CPU. After checking this post here: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/148560 , I decided to edit the number of CPUs that the VM will use. I have hyperthreading enabled on my server, so the Host system sees 2 CPUs.

After editing the Guest VM to use 2 CPUs, the CPU usage does not reach 100% as before. Not sure if this was a factor in the crashes that I was experiencing, but I will be monitoring performance.

Note: I ran the cpuburn program on the Host system to check if 100% CPU stress on the host would cause a lockup. With 7 minutes of 100% stress the system was still stable.
